Cricket in Corfu: The key players

CricketCorfu.Com was established in 2009 to promote Corfu as an alternative and attractive sporting destination of choice to touring teams, to introduce and promote Corfu to a new cohort of visitors and to support the work of the Hellenic Cricket Federation. Since inception we have welcomed in excess of a hundred touring cricket teams to the island and continue to develop and widen our reach, introducing teams from South Africa, Holland, Australia and India as well as from the UK.

The Hellenic Cricket Federation, based in Corfu, is the official formal body founded in 1996 by special legislative decree to promote, develop and maintain cricket as a national sport and to provide professional training opportunities on an on-going basis.  The HCF is a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), supports in excess of a dozen teams and welcomes new Greeks from overseas into the cricketing family, encourages both men’s and women’s participation, provides equipment and facilities and arranges and runs numerous cricket tournaments.  In 2023, the HCF celebrates the momentous anniversary of Corfu playing cricket continuously for 200 years, one of only four nations that can claim such a birthday! Commemorations and celebrations included visiting teams from the Lord Taveners, Gurkhas, Royal Household and British Army Development.

The Authors’ XI Cricket Club was founded in 1891 - luminary members include PG Wodehouse, JM Barrie and Arthur Conan Doyle and AA Milne – who have toured extensively – including to the Vatican, Japan, India and Iceland – and whose current team is led by Charlie Campbell and includes writers, authors, journalists and poets.  Corfu now welcomes the world’s oldest wandering cricket team ....
