The Beginning

​A day of variously timed arrivals, unpacking and settling in, there are no events but we will be gathering and welcoming guests and visitors at an informal supper at Festival familiar favourite, PERGOLA TAVERNA, St Sophia Street in the Jewish Quarter from 8pm 

 

 

 

 

 


 

TUESDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER - DAYTIME

Greek Beach Club Day

Collection (& return) by coach from Corfu Town to Micronisi Beach Club, south Corfu, for a day of cocktails, sun & sea worshipping and a magnificent beachside lunch created especially by chefs Manolis & Spiro for our CLF guests at the island's premier hideaway spot, Micronisi 

 

 

 

 

 


 

TUESDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER - EVENING 

Love In A Hot Climate 

Plous Bookshop & Cafe - Corfu Town

Four different authors whose characters have been set against Corfu's landscapes and her people.  Why and how has this island inspired  - Joy Skye, Mandy Baggot and Isabelle Broom discuss their location with Chair Melanie Hewitt -



 

WEDNESDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER - DAYTIME

In Others' Footsteps - A Walk In Corfu Town 

Led by writer and Philhelene Matthew Hisbent, local academic and polyglot Christina Papadatou and the Festival's own Philip Louvros, familiarise yourself with the Mediterranean town that the Durrells, Gordon of Khartoum, Edward Lear, Ioannis Capodistrias and other luminaries once called home.  The culmination of the walk will be at Nobile Wine Bar with 

a debut reading from her new play, After Melissa, by writer, dramatist and filmmaker Jane Coyle 

Wear comfortable shoes!

Old Corfu Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What are the challenges of preserving and treasuring but​ still
working and living within a monument?  How do the citizens modernise and improve their home city whilst
still respecting its heritage?  How can a place welcome thousands of appreciative and curious visitors but
still function in the real daily world? 

UNESCO Chair Holder Professor Stavros Katsios and ​​​​​researcher Christina Kermida Papadatou

discuss with expert panellist, historian and classicist Natalie Haynes with questions submitted by (but sadly 
unable to join us in person) Peter Frankopan, Bettany Hughes and Tom Holland.

FRIDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER 2022​ - DAYTIME

Nectar & Ambrosia Tasting 

Dionysus and​ Demeter are the Greek god and goddess of wine and food but, during this specially curated event, they will be joined by Apollo, the god of music too.   Sommelier and gastronomy consultant Stamatis Iseris will carefully pair a selection of Greek fine wines with suitably partnered local food specialities and the tastings will be accompanied by especially composed musical interludes for a truly immersive and complete experience.

Introduction & Welcome

Acclaimed and prize winning novelist Evie Wyld will open this evening's events by reading a new short story

Visiting especially commissioned for the 5th Corfu Literary Festival.


 

Matt Haig, author of bestsellers The Midnight Library, How To Stop Time and Reasons to Stay Alive amongst other titles, in conversation with Anthony McGowan, prolific children's and YA author, as well as writer of adult novels and non fiction,  Tony won the Carnegie Gold Medal for his book Lark.

​Why, in the era of online tourist advice, do we still need and love travel writing?  And why and how has Greece so seeped into our consciousness? 

How has this small country and its mythology so deeply enmeshed itself into the hearts and souls of people around the world?  Why does Greece so capture our imaginations and what is the Greek spirit?  Authors and travellers Peter Fiennes, Julian Hoffman and Michael Vatikiotis in conversation with Sofka Zinovieff

conversation with Helena Lee, writer and editor responsible for Harper's Bazaar's features, art and culture coverage,

SATURDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER 2023 - EVENING

The Corfu Literary Festival in proud partnership with the National Gallery of Greece, Corfu presents

THE 2022 NIKOS LOUVROS LECTURE
EL GRECO: JAZZ AGE OLD MASTER

Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, was born in Crete, trained in Venice under Titian and found success

in Spain.  This c16th Master seems to have been centuries ahead of his time and is thought to have strongly
influenced the Expressionist and Cubist movements and found a new appreciative audience as the most Modern
of the Old Masters during the early 20th century.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Accompanied with a little music from renowned New York cabaret voice and children’s author Craig Pomranz, our expert panel will discuss El Greco’s life, his inspirations and his legacy and relevance.  Director of the Corfu Annexe of Greece's National Gallery, Marina Papasotiriou will be joined by Professor Sarah Churchwell and fine arts journalist and travel author Louise Nicholson

Broadcaster and writer Dr Adam Rutherford and writer and theologist Professor Francesca Stavrakopoulou discuss
where we are as a species, why we got here and how and whether our influences and directions are led by
natural evolution, science or belief.  Chaired by lecturer, authors and historian, Michael Taylor

 

SUNDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER – DAYTIME

Corfu Town's elegant and historic main square hosts a celebration cricket match and
looks forward to 200th Anniversary of cricket on the island in 2023

To The Edges Of The World

Award winning author of critically acclaimed books The Snow Geese and The Music Room, Fellow of the Royal Society
of Literature and, incidentally, described by a team mate as "undoubtedly the nicest man in cricket" William Fiennes
will be in discussion with travel writer, author of Outpost and Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund Dan Richards

Author, broadcaster and professional journalist, Sarah Churchwell, will discuss her explosive and highly acclaimed
book The Wrath to Come, a thought-provoking and illuminating analysis of Gone With The Wind with historian,
author and The Rest is History podcast creator, Tom Holland

For out-of-town events, coach travel to and from the venues will be arranged for those without their
own transport included in the ticket price

 

Corfu Literary Festival will be hosting their speakers for supper, post-event, each evening and guests,
event attendees and visitors are encouraged and welcomed to

join us at our chosen tavernas
